When I was young, I used to think that being grateful was simply using proper manners. I believed that saying “thank you” made me a thankful and kind person, but I soon realized that this is not the reality.. Gratitude means appreciating all that you receive, counting your blessings and noticing the simple things. Gratitude is a little thing but its consequences can be enormous. Scientists have been studying it for years and recent studies have shown remarkable improvements (physically and emotionally) in people who have been grateful for each day.
I also learned how much control we have over gratitude! It doesn't come naturally and that's why we must choose and practice gratitude.

THE DIFFERENCE
We tend to take for granted the good that is already present in our lives, but try to imagine losing some of the things that you take for granted, such as your home, your family, your ability to see, hear or walk. Then imagine getting each of these things back, one by one, and think about how grateful you would be for each and every one! Behavioral and psychological research has shown that the practice of gratitude has surprising improvements in our lives - less anxiety, decreased depression, self-acceptance, more energy, increased giving, easier breathing and greater happiness!

GRATITUDE IS A CHOICE
Every day, every hour and every minute, we can choose to be grateful. We can choose to be grateful for the lunch we have at the table, the driver who stops so we can cross the street, the hot shower we have after a long day or the beautiful colors of the sunset. We can choose to stop for a while, think about ourselves and what surrounds us, and enjoy all these little things!

GRATITUDE IS A PRACTICE
Gratitude should not be just a reaction, but something that you are constantly looking for and constantly practicing. There are lots of ways to practice gratitude - start a gratitude journal, write a "thank you" letter, meditate, verbalize your appreciation or set an intention to be grateful in the morning. With the practice of gratitude you are training your mind to see the good in every situation!

GRATITUDE IS AN ATTITUDE
Once you become oriented toward looking for things to be grateful for, you will find that you begin to appreciate simple pleasures that you previously took for granted. You will be able to accept yourself bettern, with all your strengths and weaknesses, you will recognize what makes you really happy and carry it with you every day!
